Autumn Leaves

Fall is here! Even though it doesn’t feel like it in Florida. Fall is
a wonderful time of year and it lends itself to lots of
opportunities for communication and speech therapy practice.
In this post I am going to list some ways that you can work on
speech your child’s speech therapy goals by age group.

Toddlers:
-Spend some time outside with your toddler. If you are in a
stroller-take some time to point out the trees and the different
colors the leaves are. “You see the trees Johnny?” “Look at the
leaves they are yellow and red and green.”
-Find a clear area of grass and place a pile of leaves on that
patch of grass and let your little one run through the pile.
Giving cues such as “One two three JUMP!!!” or “Ready Set
GO!!!” are great ways to saturate your child’s world with
language.

Preschool Aged Children:
You can actually do the same activities that were
recommended for toddlers but make the demand for language
greater. When taking your walk you can play “I Spy” with the
different color leaves; or count the trees. Bring a bag along and
collect a few leaves and when you get home have them glue the
leaves to paper. “Mouse’s First Fall” by Lauren Thompson is a
great book to read with your preschooler. This book is also
available on google play in case you want to put it on your
phone.

School Aged Children:
Time outside with your school aged child may be more difficult
to fit in with all of the other demands of school and the lure of
technology but time outside with your kids is still so beneficial
to them. Take them to a fall festival and take pictures of them
participating in the different activities (or better yet-have
them take pictures of you). Delete all of the pictures you do not
want and then go back through and have your child recap the
day’s activities by telling you about the pictures. Story retell
and sequencing are great language practice for school aged
kids. If you have extra time on your hands-print out the
pictures and have them write a sentence describing the
pictures. Either way fall is a great time of year. Enjoy the
weather, the change in the seasons and the fall holidays with
your little ones—you will be glad you did. Happy Fall!!!
